Biology 375: Introduction to the Biological Aspects of Conservation
Credits: 1
Grading: A-F
Meeting time: 3:30-4:20 Monday. Seminar starts on 9 February
Class size: 20 max.
Instructor: Anthony R. Ives, Interim Chair of the BAC Major
Target audience: Students who are interested in the BAC Major or who have recently declared the BAC Major, ideally freshmen and sophomores.
Goals:
- To enhance students' undergraduate education by increasing their understanding of the possibilities available on the UW-Madison campus for coursework and research within their major. This includes building community among BAC majors.
- To discuss opportunities for internships, study abroad, service learning and careers that might be available for BAC majors.
Format: The seminar will be run in an informal setting, with a strong component of interactive learning and small-group collaborations. Topics relating to the two goals of the seminar will be intermixed throughout the semester. Students will take responsibility for some topics in the seminar, while other topics will be covered by invited speakers or the instructor.
Readings: Within the first 2 meetings we will discuss the book Making the Most of College: Students Speak Their Minds by Richard J. Light. I recommend that students read this book before the first meeting. Other readings will be selected based on needs for individual topics.
