ICBE oversight
ICBE was created to provide an institutional home and advocacy for cross-departmental efforts in biology education without leading to creation of a College of Biology. Therefore, the oversight of ICBE must include a strong advocate position (Director) as well as broadly representative group to develop a biology community consensus on issues related to biology education.
a. A Director shall be appointed by the provost following an advertised search. It is normally expected that the Director of ICBE will be chosen from among the current faculty. The Director shall be responsible for day-to-day oversight of operations of ICBE, developing an annual budget for approval by the Steering Committee, and communication across campus for biology education.
b. A Steering Committee of six people shall meet monthly. The director will convene the meetings. An important function of the Steering Committee is to collaborate with the Director in interpreting the goals and needs for biology education. The Steering Committee will be appointed by the provost. The Director will provide a slate of candidates to the provost following discussion with the Advisory Committee (Section 1.c.). It is anticipated that all faculty on the Steering Committee will be from the Biological Sciences division, but this is not a requirement. It is anticipated that many of the members of the Steering Committee will be drawn from Advisory Committee, but this is not a requirement. The Steering Committee will approve reports from ICBE and major policy issues and budget expenditures. The Steering Committee will be advisory to the Director. However, the Steering Committee can advise the provost if they believe the Director is not functioning in the best interests of the biology community. The Steering Committee shall be composed of four faculty and two academic staff members. Standing schedule conflicts would be resolved by replacing the Steering Committee member.
c. A broadly representative Advisory Committee that focuses on information exchange and representation of the diverse components of the biology community on campus. The Advisory Committee should have two or more meetings per year at which the Director will report on current issues in biology education and where members will be invited to raise issues for discussion by the group. The focus would be on inclusiveness. The composition would be (one person representing each bullet except as noted):
Advising/Majors (Chair or their representative)

- Molecular Biology
- Biological Aspects of Conservation
CBE Colleagues (4)*
Colleges (Chosen by respective Dean)
- L&S
- CALS
- One person agreed upon by Med. /Vet./Nursing/Pharmacy

- Other department with significant ICBE involvement (Rotating)
Academic Staff (4)* (both instructional and administrative staff should be represented
Students (4)* (both undergraduates and graduate [TAs] should be represented)
Any member of the Steering Committee not covered by one of the sections above
* “broadly representative of the campus biology community.”
d. There will be no faculty appointments within ICBE.
Committees
a. The Steering Committee will function in place of typical standing committees including, but not limited to, the Institute Curriculum Committee and the Institute Academic Planning Committee.
b. The Director and Steering Committee may designate ad hoc committees as they see fit to work on issues that may arise. Ad hoc committee members could be drawn from the Advisory Committee or from outside the institute.
c. The Director and Steering Committee may recommend to the Advisory Committee the creation of separate standing committees when they determine that such a standing committee would further the mission of the Institute.
